Project Description

The facility provides state-of-the-art maintenance bays for Calgary Transit’s new fleet of Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses, bus storage, and an administration centre.
There are 36 maintenance bays, 2 bus-cleaning bays, an on-site compressed natural gas fueling infrastructure, and storage for over 400 buses.  The facility is located in the Stoney industrial area in north-east Calgary.

 

Green building features:

The project was awarded 53 of the 55 credits to be achieved in the design phase. The project was ultimately awarded Gold in LEED v4 for Building Design + Construction – the first large commercial project certified (at any level) and the second Gold certified (of any building type) under LEED v4 in Canada.

Sustainable design features of the STF include
• building siting to conserve two extensive existing wetlands,
• on-site management of storm water (pending provincial approval)
• open space accessible to building occupants,
• use of native plants,
• green roof,
• structural design to reduce demand for steel and concrete,
• windows providing natural daylighting yet designed to deter bird collision,
• architectural design promoting physical activity,
• a high performance heat recovery ventilation system,
• an overall energy cost savings over 54%,
• power demand reduction ready
• roof solar photovoltaics ready
• indoor water usage reduction over 40%,
• rainwater use for bus washing,
• environmentally responsible interior coatings and finishes
• indoor air quality management
• an industrial operations and office waste recycling strategy.

LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is an internationally recognized green building certification system, providing third-party verification that a building is designed and built using strategies to achieve sustainability. LEED v4, a rigorous advancement over the previous version, came into effect in the same month that the STF project was launched.
