PARLIAMENT HILL LANDSCAPE SUSTAINABILITY MEASURES PLAN, Ottawa, Ontario - National Capital Region

Parliament Hill – view from the south (2010 source: wikipedia)

Project Description

A comprehensive plan of measures to achieve sustainability, applicable to all site-related projects and works, was developed for the ongoing restoration of Parliament Hill.

Landscape measures are to be integrated with a sustainability framework for all disciplines for the concurrent Centre Block restoration.  The measures follow initiatives and directions as set out in previous plans including the Long Term Vision and Plan, Parliament Hill Landscape Plan Implementation Strategy and Guidelines (2013), and Parliament Hill Landscape Plan (1999).

In the original vision for the design of Parliament Hill, the landscape held high value as an integrated element with all structures.

In the sustainability plan,  measures are ranked:

  1. Option A: measures are current practice,
  2. Option B: measures are achievable and provide a positive cost-benefit within 50 years, and
  3. Option C: measures are achievable with extra input or special direction.

Options may depend on degree of implementation as well as choices among alternative compliance paths. Measures are based on green building frameworks including LEED, WELL, SITES, PARKSMART, TRUE, and the LIVING BUILDING CHALLENGE.
